The Second Annual Be Honest Portfolio Review!

 

Springtime means preparation for the 2nd Annual BE HONEST PSUGD Portfolio Review.

This year we teamed up Designspeaks!

The review is going down at The Cleaners on May 5th.

We are inviting a ton of awesome Portland Makers to take a look at the great work that is coming out of the Graphic Design Program at Portland State University.

Along with looking and talking about work, we are also hosting what is sure to be a fantastic lecture by the fabulous Jennifer Daniel. 

BE HONEST will also mark the launch of the PSU.GD etsy store. 

BE HONEST will also have a raffle.

BE HONEST will also have food and drink.

BE HONEST will make your dreams come true.

Stay tuned for more details, but for now, keep May 5th reserved for a night of intense design celebration. INTENSE! DESIGN! CELEBRATION!

Thirty Portland Designers and Illustrators Exhibit New Work About the Trail Blazers...(including many PSU GD Faculty and a few GD students...come support).

Portland designer Clifton Burt is pleased to present Boomshakalaka: A Show Celebrating the Portland Trail Blazers, an exhibition at Land Gallery that showcases new work from some of Portland’s most influencial designers, illustrators, photographers, and makers. The exhibition offers thirty perspectives of the Blazers that range from the reflective to the ridonkulous.

“There are some exciting ideas being produced for this show,” says show-organizer Clifton Burt, “like spirit animals for each of the players, work based on their tattoos, and portraits of both new and old school Blazers. Participants are working in a variety of materials: wood, fabric, sound, video, cardboard, paper, and more. It’s going to be quite a spectacle.”

You are invited to ADX! TH 2/24 A new resource for the creative community...

ADX, a new creative facility is opening on SE 11th and Stark. Our goal is to be a resource for the creative community— from students and recent graduates to freelancers and to hobbyists. Our member-based warehouse will contain a wood shop, metal shop, digital media station, coworking desks, private studios (housed in a few swanky vintage travel trailers) soft goods production areas, gallery, workshop/classes, and special events. The core of our “team” is also a collective of freelance design, branding, and marketing professionals who will also be available to help launch members' ideas and products, prototype, and ideally take members’ work to market.

We have TWO IN PERSON Show & Tell events this week. (All presentations take place at noon in Room 160.)

On Tuesday at noon we have Brian W. Jones visiting us from Belfast, Maine. He is a former Project M Alumni and current advisor as well as an active and thoughtful designer. He is affiliated with Project M, Pie Lab and Nada Bike. His practice, Welcome™ works with a network of like minded individuals to do great work for clients that they believe in.

This is a great opportunity to find out more about Project M and all of the other good stuff that Brian has his hands in.

On Thursday at noon we have Kate O'Connor and Ely Kim. Kate and Ely both have their MFA's from Yale and are spending a few months working as Art Direction Interns at W+K. They are both extremely smart, talented and hilarious and welcome any and all questions about their work, graduate school and working as an Art Direction intern at W+K.

Think. Less. Proposes that the true environmental, social & economic costs of consumer choices are not visible to consumers. If the cost of waste were made more transparent, by connecting the price at the cash register with the cost in terms of environmental, social and economic sustainability, it might foster a sense of urgency and responsibility about our finite resources.The tools of branding are used for a labeling/receipt system that ranks waste for food products.Consumers are awarded points for making purchases that generate less waste. These points canbe used towards purchase of further low-waste items.

Perfectly Fine is a proposal to Rebrand Portland’s Municipal Water Supply. Bottled water represents one of the most egregious examples of needless waste in our culture, but most efforts to shift behavior focus on the negative approach of discouraging the use of bottled water.Perfectly Fine takes on the challenge of the negative perception of bottled water by exploring are-branding and marketing campaign for Portland tap water. 

Waste Not is a five week seminar that engages graphic design students in discussion and hands on research to rethink the role they play in product design, packaging, distribution and marketing. Students review, discuss and brainstorm social, environmental and economic issues related to waste. Key concepts addressed include de-materialization (dependency on the material whenwhat you really need is the service), the true cost of a product versus perceived wants and needs,our throw-away culture and the process of understanding how choices or actions influence oneanother within a whole.

Congratulations to these fine students and their wonderful presentations for being selected. Now go and hear them be presented on November 18th! GOOD WORK!

FIRST: Today you are all invited to paint a mural with our visiting designer WILL BRYANT!

SECOND: Will is going to be our Show and Tell Guest this week! Come and listen to him talk about his work this Thursday at noon in room 160 in the annex. A little bit about WILL! (look at his website!)

Will Bryant makes stuff as a freelance creative at Public School, an Austin based collective comprised of designers, illustrators, and photographers. He completed undergrad at Mississippi State University in December 2008, married his childhood sweetheart in January 2009, and then settled in central Austin. He enjoys drawing, screen printing, blogging, vinyl, painting, sewing, cycling, dancing and 1990s basketball players (just ask about his infatuation with Michael Jordan). Mr. "Fancy Pants" Bryant has recently had the honor to work with Gowalla, Nike, Chronicle Books, K2, and would likely collaborate with you.

THIRD: PROCESS≥product opens THURSDAY NIGHT. The reception is 4 to 6 in the AB Lobby Gallery. Hope to see you all there!

FOURTH: Will has a solo show at LAND Gallery on Friday night! Go and see his work in PERSON.

Show & Tell: Jim Datz is beaming in this Thursday, October 14th at NOON!

So excited to beam in Jim Datz this week! This will be the first time that Jim has talked with Portland State students, so please come with questions about his work. If you are too shy to ask, leave your question in the comments section or tweet them to me!

A little bit about Jim:

Jim Datz is an Illustrator and Designer whose wandering career path has lead to Brooklyn, where he now lives and works. His work spans disciplines and embodies unburdened optimism and freedom of movement. He sells editioned screenprints, decorated apparel and homegoods in stores and galleries in the US and UK, and his small independent office—Neither Fish Nor Fowl—manages professional projects for clients of all sizes...particularly those who have a similar interest in exceeding market demand for depth, quality and attention to detail.
