Rory Phillips' Tengu Student Packaging Gets The Spotlight

2009 PSU-GD graduate, Rory Philip's student work has been featured on many a packaging and design blogs including the dieline and visualize. And to top it off the work was re-posted on blogs in Asia (Korea) and Europe (France's Easy Food). Rory was also contacted by publishers in the US and Asia asking to include his work in their books! Exciting!

ART & COPY is about advertising and creativity: the profound effects of advertising on modern culture and the innovative minds that have shaped the industry. Beginning with the "Creative Revolution" of the mid-1960s, ART & COPY features writers and artists such as Lee Clow, who introduced the Macintosh computer in the commercial "1984"; Dan Wieden, who coined "Just Do It" and forever changed how we connect personal achievement and sports; Hal Riney, whose emotional “It’s morning in America” ads iced Ronald Reagan’s reelection; Phyllis K. Robinson, who helped invent the "me generation" with a Clairol tagline; George Lois, whose “I want my MTV” animated the channel; Tommy Hilfiger, whose campaign turned his name into an instant fashion success story; Jeff Goodby and Rich Silverstein—"Got Milk?"; and Mary Wells Lawrence, who repackaged the city of New York via her "I love NY" campaign. By defying the conventions of traditional advertising and focusing more on ideas and images than overt sales, each of these creative pioneers brought a revolutionary spirit to their work. Along with entertaining interviews, Pray (SURFWISE, SCRATCH) interweaves captivating historical footage and some of the great ads of all time to fashion an inspiring tribute to the synthesis of art, commerce and human emotion. 321 students in the night section visited w+k. We met with Brad Trost, art director, Maya Roberts and Alicia Kuna, studio managers. We had a great time —well at least I know I (Lis C.) did! Maya generously presented an amazing tiered promotional campaign for Laika's film Coraline. 

w+k's "challenge: How can we get a broader audience to be excited about a movie that looks like a typical children's film but is much more? How could we use the equities we had to market this film in a way that reflects its unique nature and gets people excited to see it?" Here are some of their answers:

To get an overview of the whole campaign click here. Among the work that was shared with us: mini-documentaries about the making of Coraline, campaign strategy, dunks, wild postings, street art installations, interactive storefronts, movie posters, web sites and 50 hand crafted boxes that were sent  to "influencers" (like notcot.org) to help promote the film. Louise Fili + Logo Design

 

Louise Fili Ltd, founded in 1989, specializes in logo, package, restaurant, type, book and book jacket design. A senior designer for Herb Lubalin from 1976-1978, Louise Fili was art director for Pantheon Books from 1978-1989, where she designed over 2000 book jackets. 

She has received awards from every major design competition, including Gold and Silver medals from the Society of Illustrators and the New York Art Directors Club, the Premio Grafico from the Bologna Book Fair, and three James Beard award nominations. Fili has taught and lectured on design and typography and her work is in the permanenet collection of the Library of Congress, the Cooper-Hewitt Museum, and the Biliothéque Nationale.
