Show & Tell: Panic, Inc! NOON - Thursday, Feb. 4th (In person!)

If you took Interactive Design in the past year, you might remember Coda being recommended for your hand-coding tool. Coda is made by Panic, Inc., an indie Mac software development company from from right here in Portland, OR! Co-founder Cabel Sasser and designer Neven Mrgan have both agreed to come visit in person to offer some insight to the world of interface & interactive design.

Not only are Cabel and Neven super nice (and funny!), their work is consistently recognized as among the best and most polished in the industry (for example, check out the extreme attention to detail put in to every post on the company blog). If you've EVER thought about web, interface, or user experience design, you should not miss this opportunity!

Yay! In Person! Let's welcome Tyler Lang and Elsa Chaves of Always With Honor!

Always With Honor is a creative collective specializing in map, icon, and information design. Our mission is to create work that helps break down complex information into simple (and fun) designs that are easily understood and enjoyed.

To date our work has featured in such publications as Good, Esquire, Wired, Money Magazine, and Wired Italia, and we are regular contributors to Monocle. Our work also appears in books published by Chronicle Books and Harper Collins.

This Monday at 11:30 in Room 165 let's welcome Julia Rothman! Julia is the PERFECT person to talk to about surface and pattern design - she is a super pro! Along with being a master pattern maker, she is also a terrific illustrator, design studio founder and blogger extraordinaire. PLEASE check out her work and be ready to ask her questions. This is your chance to ask about surface design, pattern making, working for other people, running your own studio, blogging about books and being all around awesome.

Dan is from Ohio. Andre is from Bulgaira. At the combined age of 53 their work has been recognized by shiny awards, appeared in lots of magazines, coffee table books and 3 museums. They met while studying graphic design at California College of the Arts.

Andre and Dan also co-teach Design, Type and New Media classes at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, and are on the thesis committee at California College of the Arts. A book they wrote about transitioning from school to work in the field of graphic design, entitled Never Sleep, is in stores now. They have lectured at over 30 events throughout the US and Europe.

Andre eats meat and drinks that purple stuff, Dan dislikes puppies and is somewhat of an amateur magician.

Okay, listen up you little sh*ts...we are going to talk ID work. (what I think Draplin would say to you on Tuesday...)

wow. psu folks...we have SUCH a treat for you this Tuesday (esp. you 321 people)...AARON DRAPLIN is coming in to talk about making marks. This is pretty special for a number of reasons. ONE: He lives HERE and is coming to talk with you all face to face. I honestly can't think of a better person to bring in to talk about this topic with you all and we are so lucky that he LIVES HERE and actually wants to take time out of his busy schedule to spend some time with you all. See, PSU doesn't have money and all of these wonderful people come in on their own dime. THIS IS SPECIAL. please don't ever forget this.

TWO: Draplin makes an amazing amount (AMAZING AMOUNT) of work (see some of it above), but on Tuesday we are going to focus on his logos and ID work and his process. I am hoping that this will strip down some of the fear/angst that I have been feeling/hearing from you all about making marks. What I have ALWAYS enjoyed about Aaron is how real he is and how it really shines through in his work - the concept and spirit are not lost and it glows on the page.

Mr. Draplin is smart, approachable and a supremely good man. The hour or so that he is going to spend with us on Tuesday will make us better people. I am not lying to you. It would BEHOOOOOVE you (yes, I just used the word behoove - deal with it) to attend. Your ID work will thank you. Your clients will thank you. I will thank you. You will thank you. Show & Tell ----> The Little Friends of Printmaking

Hey! Our first Show & Tell of the year kicks off the the terrific printmaking duo The Little Friends of Printmaking! Come and join us in room 170 as they beam in via skype at NOON on January 7th (THIS THURSDAY!)

Here is a lil' info on the ACE team!

You can easily spot The Little Friends of Printmaking in a crowd—their inky hands and clothes are a dead giveaway. Their work is just as distinctive. Husband-and-wife team J W & Melissa Buchanan first made a name for themselves through their silkscreened concert posters, but soon branched out into further fields, designing fancy junk for whoever would pay them money. In addition to their work as illustrators and designers, they continue their fine art pursuits through exhibitions, lectures, and artists’ residencies worldwide. Their awards include honors from the Art Directors’ Club, American Illustration, and Communication Arts; and their work has been published in the books New Masters of Poster Design [Rockport], Juxtapoz: Poster Art [Gingko Press], and Handmade Nation [Princeton Architectural Press], among others. The Little Friends currently live in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with two very round cats.

Ian Coyle is a creative strategist, designer, speaker, interaction developer and all around decent fellow. He is also the chief creative officer and founder of Superheroes, Inc. He loves typography, the sound of presses running, the smell of ink, and the touch of fine paper.
