PDX RE-PRINT Series Continues This Thursday!

Rubbings from the Rose City documents Portland through one-of-a-kind handmade etchings of building façades, gravestones, street signs, manhole covers and more. Self published by Christopher Gossett in 1983, the book provides a unique snapshot of the city and its many familiar landmarks. Celebrate the reprinting of this out-of-print book, with a panel discussion on the interface of art and the built environment.

The panel brings together some of the city’s foremost thinkers in art, architecture and history. Each presenter will talk for 10 minutes about a specific place in Portland they appreciate for its architecture, history and unique art forms. There will then be a few questions of all panelists, before a short Q & A with the audience. Afterward, we’ll have a brief “rubbing demo” with souvenirs to take home for all!

PDX RE-PRINT is a series of four publications and free public lectures celebrating obscured and out-of-print books on Portland’s visual culture. Held at roving venues on last Thursdays at 7PM, lectures bring together authors, scholars, activists and community members, who will use the books to discuss how we understand our city. Each book will be reissued for sale by Publication Studio on the night of the lecture.

PDX RE-PRINT will bring authors, some who have not lived in Portland in the last 20-30 years, back to the city to examine the dramatic changes over the past three decades. Events will also highlight contemporary cultural workers who draw from these self-published pioneers. Together, the four books tell a story that can help us understand our past and fully appreciate the quality of life Portlanders enjoy today.

Pick Up the PSU Dining Guide Featuring Tons of PSU GD Student Work!!

 

Hey PSU graphic design students, be sure to pick up the Vanguard's 2010 Dining Guide on Friday. The year's guide features work from numerous, amazing PSU graphic design students, including art direction and design by Justin Flood, a beautiful map designed by Alyx Jolivet, cover design by August Miller and illustration from Dmitri Swain and Colby Brooks. The guide also features tons of tasty food photos, which were directed by Heather Noddings, and photographed by Saria Dy, Aaron Leopold, Drew Martig, August Miller, Sage Warner and Adam Wickham. We hope that you all enjoy it!

 

Congratulations Nicole Lavelle // Willamette Week

FortPort, GO!

Aaron Rayburn and Ben Vickery, two of our very own graphic design students, have embarked on a journey of content creation and creative curating.

This week saw the launch of FORTPORT, a design blog dedicated to showcasing the inspiring, the amazing, and the just plain good. Those are my words, but I know we will see some great things from Ben and Aaron.

I'm going to try and convince these two to have a launch party.

Aaron Rayburn ::: Talking Birds Show at Land ::: Thoughts on the exhibition process

 You have an art show! Wow! Is this your first show? 

I had some pieces in the PSU student show, but this is my first out-in-the-world solo show. It seemed like a good idea, to start making a name for myself before I graduated. Which basically means working every night after school and regular work. Alot of work. Did I mention work?

New student-initiated blog

Thanks to the supportive nature of the design department at Portland State, juniors Ben Vickery and Aaron Rayburn are now co-curators of a brand new design blog, Fort Port. The Portland State Daily Vanguard gave us a little write up in their paper yesterday! Good press for our awesome show and lecture. They even contacted Frank to get some quotes!

Too bad they didn't contact any students or faculty! Or link to our blog...

Oh well. We're all students, we're all learning, right?

Find the article here. Go give the Vanguard some comments so they'll think, "Wow, what an active student group. We should write about them more often!"

PSU in HOW Magazine

The Portland State Graphic Design program is HOT! We should be on your RADAR!

We know this, of course, but we are THRILLED that HOW Magazine decided to spotlight PSU (along with Mississippi State and Temple University-Tyler School of Art) as hidden gem design schools.

The July/August issue is out now! Pick one up if you want to read more about our program and if you want to peep the works of current students (Nicole Lavelle, Jong Seong Lee, Rory Phillips) and recent grads (Drew Marshall and Cari Vander Yacht).
