Position Overview
This position is an important position in Student Activities and Leadership Programs (SALP) and requires someone who is flexible, creative, and can take initiative. The ideal candidate is a graphic design and/or web development student who is interested in furthering their design skills, web skills, and building their portfolio. This position would be responsible for a variety of materials (ads, brochures, t-shirts, posters, video, web, etc.) related to SALP programs, services, and events. Being the only designer/web developer in the office, the person must be independent and work well with non-designers. Daily contact with the director/mentor, but input and feedback for projects come from various professionals. Photography experience is a plus.
Duties and Responsibilities
Departmental Website Content and Social Media Sites
• Update and manage syndicated content (events/news/profiles/etc.)
• Be proactive in gathering new material for all web sources connected to SALP
• Maintain visually pleasing and engaging website design and layout for the users, primarily students
• Troubleshoot for publishing information, data, videos, and images as well as page advertising for events and conferences
• Create and update social media (facebook/twitter/YouTube/etc.)
• Collaborate with director/mentor to develop and maintain social networking content
• Other duties as assigned
Graphic Designer
• Assist in completing promotional and exhibit materials, collateral, and signage
• Develop and design materials for print and web for various departmental events and programs
• Have the ability to research and make appropriate design decisions
• Properly format files for output to print vendors
• Other duties as assigned
Expectations
• Contribute and assist in overall marketing efforts
• Attend weekly meetings with director/mentor
• Maintain email account with a 48-hour response to staff and student inquiries
• Attend all-staff meetings and trainings when necessary
• Work quickly and be able to finish projects under assigned times constraints and deadlines
• Hold and adhere to regularly scheduled office hours
• Awareness of and appreciation for individual uniqueness and diversity
Minimum Qualifications
• Commitment to SALP’s mission statement and values
• Must be proficient with current design software (Adobe Creative Suite CS4 or CSS)
• Understand basic design concepts: layout, type, color, balance, form, value, shape, and line
• Practice proper file management/formatting and have a high standard for organization
• Use photographs thoughtfully and appropriately in design concepts
• Demonstrated knowledge of facebook, twitter, and YouTube (or similar)
• Demonstrated ability to write clearly and concisely with accurate spelling and punctuation
• Experience and knowledge with HTML code
• Maintain Portland State University Identity Standards and best practices of usability, sustainability, and user experience.

Preferred Qualifications
• Expertise in content management with ability to maintain a content management system
• Ability to work with and manipulate web layouts and design
• Specific knowledge and experience in managing facebook, YouTube, Flickr, and twitter accounts
• Exceptional ability to take ownership of priorities and projects from concept through execution
• Experience communicating with successfully with those from diverse backgrounds and cultures
• Ability to complete projects on time or within tight deadlines
• Skills in photography and videography
