The Portland Zine Symposium is looking for poster artwork

2011 Portland Zine Symposium Art Call!—Deadline is March 1st

The Portland Zine Symposium is looking for art submissions for the 2011 poster. This year’s theme is “Postmarked 2011.” Your art submission should be your creative interpretation of that theme.

The guidelines are simple – We are looking for a 11″ wide x 17″ tall poster that will also be used in other formats (the web, post cards, buttons, stickers, etc), so your design needs to be visible and striking at multiple sizes and resolutions (or have smaller, breakaway pieces). The design will eventually be silk screened / screen printed onto t-shirts, so limit your colors to black, white and one other color. We encourage artists to use any medium or style. We strongly prefer that the choosen artist is able to assist us in the process of transferring (resizing / cropping / etc) the image multiple mediums.

Your design should include (or be able to include once all details are finalized) the following:

- the theme

- the dates (TBA)

- the place (TBA)

- the website (www.pdxzines.com)

- “11th Annual Portland Zine Symposium”

- “A conference and zine social exploring facets of independent publishing and DIY culture.”

Submission deadline is March 1st. Submissions can be emailed to [email protected] (most strongly preferred), mailed (to PO Box 5901 Portland, OR 97228-5901), or dropped off at the IPRC.

HOW-TO ZINE!

Time for another ZINE COLLABORATION with UT Arlington!!!

Task:
Create one 8.5 x 11 zine spread (remember to include space for creep and margin) about something you know how to do: fixing your fixie, making a PB&J sammie, shopping at the mall, washing your hair, eating a ballenced meal, making a zine spread, brewing kombucha, ANYTHING!

This project is capped at 20 students so please sign up with your name, place in line, and email address.

Feast Your Eyes! Holly Wales

London designer, illustrator and educator Holly Wales' portfolio is chock-full of awesome. She's a prime example of the importance of being a multi-disciplinary, well-rounded designer. 

Her client list includes BBC, Design Week, Deutsche Bank, Fallon, Financial Times, Frieze, Nestle, The Guardian, The Independent on Sunday, The New York Times, Royal College of Art, The Telegraph, Uniqlo, Urban Outfitters and Waterstones. She also illustrates a regular weekly column, “Lives” for The New York Times Magazine. 

Her eye for detail and vibrant color-palette make her work both dynamic and playful.

She also helped to establish a collaborative studio for screen-printers, illustrators and designers called OPEN in East London (check it out, it's so rad) that focuses on combining education and entrepreneurship within an illustration and design discipline.

Last Thursday Art Opening: Sea Legs at the Together Gallery!

Brandon Roegner, a PSU GD student, sent me word of a sweet art show opening tomorrow evening at the Together Gallery on NE Alberta. He is interning at Tangible Worldwide, where he works with the creative duo of Jolby (Josh Kenyon and Colby Nichols.)

Jolby, works with photographer Ashley Forrette work on this show, Sea Legs. The show will explore the legends, mythology, and superstitions held by sailors of the 1800's through a mix of illustration and photography.



The artists offered sneak peeks of the work in the days leading up to the opening, so here's a few images to get you excited.

The show will also be available online for those not in Portland following the opening. But go to the opening! See this stuff in person!

The Together Gallery is located at 2916 Northeast Alberta Street in Portland. The show will be up through March.

Awesome art opening this Friday!

Attention! Attention! Art show alert!

The fabulous Jess Hirsch, a Portland artist and illustrator, presents new drawings and prints at Tilde, a shop in Sellwood that stocks terrific creative goods.

The show is called Pattern & Place. Here is what Jess has to say about it:

The show is called Pattern & Place and is based on national animals. I combined the creatures with patterns found within their region, mostly stemming from folk art. In conjunction with the new drawings, I made my first batch of Deer Beard Fabric & Paper Stationery: lino-cut cards, wallets, totes, and prints!

If you can't make it to the show you can see some of the magic on Etsy. I will be posting photos of the set up shortly on the old blog as well. I would love to see you! So come say hi if you can.

The PSU Student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers needs design students!

This sounds like a really cool opportunity to get your work worn by a ton of people! Threadless, PSU style.

The PSU student chapter for American Society for Civil Engineers (ASCE) wants to collaborate with art students to design a logo and t-shirt for our student chapter teams.

Things we are looking for (T-shirt/Logo):
- Art that encompasses the idea of engineering
- A design that incorporates our steel bridge and concrete canoe teams as the shirts we will be wearing will be representing PSU on both a regional and National level.
- Something that has a "Portland" or Northwest feel to it.
- Appropriate for professional student events.

We realize that economic times are tough right now on everyone, so ASCE will be offering fair compensation for the proposal we feel fits our needs the best. The current monetary compensation has not been finalized, but the chosen logo/t-shit will be featured as a front for our student organization at our regional and national competitions. Which is seen by many professional firms all across Portland, as well as the nation. They will also be given as thank you gifts to the companies that sponsored ASCE.

ASCE wants to extend a hand to the PSU art community in hopes that you will do the same! E-mail any questions to Zak White ([email protected]) with a subject of "Art proposal question" All art proposals should be submitted in a portfolio to the ASCE mail box located in the main office on the second floor of the engineering building. Are you going to catch up on episodes of the Jersey Shore? Read a book, maybe? Get some pizza, hit a thrift store, play some video games? Take a walk or cook dinner perhaps? Maybe you'll just spend the whole day doing homework.

Either way, here's another task to add to your list: do something cool with this guy. Make it quick, spend all day on it, whatever! Add text or don't. Make a pattern, give him something to look at, or make his suit jacket polka-dotted.

Find a high-res (higher, anyways) version over in the FoGD flick pool. Post your solutions back to the pool. Let's see what we can do!
