MoMA and Digital Type

Jason Kottke (of kottke.org) has a brief Q&A with Johnathan Hoefler (of HF&J, makers of all those beatiful typefaces we love to steal use with proper student licensing) about the recent acquisition of four of their typefaces into their permanent collection. Lots of interesting information in a few short paragraphs:

 

Kottke: Three of the four H&FJ typefaces acquired by MoMA are available for purchase on your web site. Did they just put in their credit card info and voila? Or was there a little more to it?

Hoefler: MoMA's adopting the fonts for their collection was much more complex than buying a copy online (and not only because Retina, one of our four, isn't available online.) I should start by stating that you can never actually "buy fonts" online: what one can buy are licenses, and the End-User License that surrounds a typeface does not extend the kinds of rights that are necessary to enshrine a typeface in a museum's permanent collection. The good news is that H&FJ has become as good at crafting licenses as we have at creating typefaces, an unavoidable reality in a world where fonts can be deployed in unimaginable ways. This was a fun project for our legal department.

The Portland Mercury needs a production Intern!

The Portland Mercury is looking for a production intern! This could be so cool. They ask:

Do you like to make things?
Do you make art & crafts?
Do you like pictures a little more than words?

Do you like free coffee?

Good, because the Mercury's art department is in need of a production intern.

While this is an unpaid position, we're psyched for you to get college credit, or develop the necessary skills and resume/portfolio clips you need to be a success in life! GIVE IT A SHOT—YOU PROBABLY WON'T DIE.

Our own Jasmine Silver and also Alum Nicole Lavelle have both worked with the Mercury, so it would be so rad to see the PSU GD tradition continue!

Hi Everyone! 

Thanks to those who were able to make it today. We had a good turn out and got excited about a lot of upcoming things! Below is what we talked about; please feel free to weigh in on anything!

 

Bloggity Things!

Studio Tours!

>>We're going on a tour of Pinball next Friday, Feb 4th! There will be an online sign-up post @ 9am THIS Friday, Jan 28th.

>>We're going to Second Story Interactive on March 4th, Stumptown Printers on April 1st, and Nemo Design on April 8th! (Look for reminder posts closer to the time for these!)

Etsy Store?

>> We are looking into a collective FoGD Etsy Store/fundraiser! If you've got some wares you want to sell but haven't found the time or energy to set up shop yourself (or if you want to harness the power of FoGD!), let us know!  We are still working out the kinks but would probably do a 30/70 split on the proceeds (30% going to FoGD for programming).

FoGD STUDIO TOUR SERIES: Pinball Publishing!

Friends of Graphic Design is pleased to announce that Pinball Publishing will kick of this year's Studio Tour Series! Pinball Publishing is committed to providing high quality, environmentally responsible printing, and continues to produce innovative and creative letterpress publications from their local shop in SE Portland. Did we mention they're the creators of Scout Books (A designers best friend) ?!

Here's some of the basics, straight from the horse's mouth!

What kind of printing does Pinball offer?
We specialize in custom offset printing—that means we offer spot color printing as well as 4-color process printing. We offer a wide range of fun print items, with a focus on sustainable stationery, high-impact promotional materials, and creative booklet options. We are also a "green" shop with a specially picked selection of in-house/stocked recycled papers and soy-based inks.

How did the shop start? 
Pinball Publishing grew out of the owners Laura and Austin's desire to be involved in their own design projects from conception to final printed manifestation. In the search for a quality offset printing vendor, it became clear that: 

• Design sensitive, sustainably minded printing facilities are few and far between.
• The personal service and understanding of a project were all but missing.
• The enthusiasm for the magic of printing had vanished.

We took this as a challenge to provide custom offset print options with a focus on understanding our clients' vision in an enthusiastic, design sensitive environment where novice to professional can purchase the highest level of quality with the best service in the industry.

If you've never been to a Studio Tour before, here's the low down on how it works: a sign-up post will be launched here on the FOGD Blog at 9am this Friday (1/28). Space is limited to 20 people , and sign-up is on a first-come-first-serve basis- so set your alarms! You won't want to miss this.

Feast Your Eyes! Holly Wales

London designer, illustrator and educator Holly Wales' portfolio is chock-full of awesome. She's a prime example of the importance of being a multi-disciplinary, well-rounded designer. 

Her client list includes BBC, Design Week, Deutsche Bank, Fallon, Financial Times, Frieze, Nestle, The Guardian, The Independent on Sunday, The New York Times, Royal College of Art, The Telegraph, Uniqlo, Urban Outfitters and Waterstones. She also illustrates a regular weekly column, “Lives” for The New York Times Magazine. 

Her eye for detail and vibrant color-palette make her work both dynamic and playful.

She also helped to establish a collaborative studio for screen-printers, illustrators and designers called OPEN in East London (check it out, it's so rad) that focuses on combining education and entrepreneurship within an illustration and design discipline.
