PROJECT ONE: Surface Design and Pattern Study - creation and application!
Make four final customized wallpaper designs out of type letterforms through constructing, deconstructing, and customizing letterforms from selected fonts.
Objectives: Illustrator vector drawing tools and attributes, drawing in the digital environment,
pattern design visual language. We will be looking at lots of pattern examples and also studying how pattern is used and applied from a 2-d to a 3-d surface.
Each document will be 7x7. You will have FOUR documents. You may start with only black and white. You may only use one character from one typeface. See examples below.
EXTRA: if you finish your four black and white pattern designs and what to make color versions, please do so! If you finish your color versions, go ahead and make your own pattern! Feel free to NOT use type, but to use shapes, your own drawings etc. If you do choose to do this, make sure your pattern has a concept. This will add so much to your overall design if it is aesthetically pleasing WITH a concept!
More examples after the CUT!
Left: character detail. Right: full pattern

DUE DATES:
April 7th: Progress of patterns uploaded to flickr (screen caps: SHIFT + command +4). We will have an in class Flickr Critique (where we comment on each others work via flickr comments). It is CRUCIAL that your progress is uploaded to flickr. Please label the pieces that you want reviewed - your name and the words: FLICKR CRIT. This way we know that this is your most recent work ready for review!
April 9th: Black and White printouts (quick laser prints in the lab). We are going to hang them all up and then pass out from the awesome repetition!
We are going to introduce and start our next assignment on this day as well. You will have the weekend to revise and polish your patterns WHILE working on ideas for your next assignment.
April 14th: Upload your FINAL FOUR to your blog and to Flickr. Add to the Flickr group with the title: your name + FINAL PATTERN.
