Final Project, Final Step: Designing Your Life!

Now that you've made the mood boards for your future life, let's figure out how to make it happen!

 

Make a list of costs associated with your ideal 10-years-from-now lifestyle

Make a list of achievements associated with your ideal 10-years-from-now lifestyle

 

Create a goals list/timeline outlining the costs & achievements necessary each year to get from here to there: year 9, year 8, year 7...

 

If you're having a hard time figuring this out on your own…

Identify & study another person who has achieved what you'd like to achieve. Use their life timeline as an example for your own.

 

For each year, show us your Main goal[s] and money [expenses & costs] needed for the year

From there, create mini goals that support this main goal - break it down!

 

 A metaphorical example:

Before you can have world domination, you have to take over the continent.

Before you can take the continent, you have to talk over the country.

Before you can take over the country, you have to take over the state.

Before you can take over the state, you have to take over the region.

Before you can take over the region, you have to take over the  city.

Before you can take over the  city, you have to take over the neighborhood.

Before you can take over the neighborhood, you have to take over the street.

Before you can take over the street, you have to take over your house.

For each of these goals, you'll need to create mini goals to achieve the overall goal. For example: taking over your house. make a list of ways you can you achieve influence over your roommates.

Once you have all this info., make an 11x17 infographic poster showing the rest of us a timeline of your major life goals in the next ten years. Make it pretty and visually consistent with the rest of your work and product line youve been working on all quarter! See Ben Parson's work flow chart above as an example!

Bring your printed 11x17 [it can be printed in parts and taped together] to our final class for critique and review.

Business Plan? Nope, let's do a Life Plan!

Who do you want to be in 10 years? What will your life [style] look like? Where will you live - in a city, house, apartment? Who will you live with - a partner, kids, animals? Where will you vacation, and for how long? What kind of work will you do, where and with who?

What will the most ideal version of your ten-years-from-now lifestyle look like, feel like, be like? What do you want to accomplish with your life? What do you want to contribute to the world? Let your imagination run wild. Don't let your own or others' expectations get in the way. I give you permission to be atypical and ridiculous!

For now, let's go big picture.  Don't worry about the specifics like how much money you'll need to make or incremental goals you'll have to reach - we'll tackle that next week!

In your personal Flickr account, create a set called “367.08 - life plan” Within this set, upload your "ten-years-from-now"moodboard, which should include pictures and text descriptions. Then, add it to the 367 group pool by 6pm Sunday night!

Disclaimer: I haven't been to or know anyone here, but it sounds like such a great place to partner with if you're thinking of developing your own line of sewn goods! 

They'll work with you to develop Prototypes and Design Consultation, Pattern Drafting, Sample Construction, Marking and Cutting, Size Grading, nships with subcontractors, and Branding!

 Let's check it out in person and ask them tons of questions!

In-class Assignment / homework: Selling Your Wares in Various Types of Venues!

1. create an 8.5x11 mood board of at least 3 stores in portland to hit up to carry your line [for example: new seasons]. show us photos of each shop interior & other vendors items.

 2. create an 8.5x11 mood board of at least 2 national trade shows to participate in [for example: the national stationery show]. show us photos of other vendors & booths, and all the costs associated with participating. 

 3. create an 8.5x11 mood board of one regional retail show to participate in [for example: crafty wonderland]. show us photos of other vendors & booths, and all the costs associated with participating. 

4. show us a visual representation of your wholesale tradeshow booth, including costs & sourcing.
