Assignment #4, Phase 2: Written Design Brief, Establishement Board & Preliminary Logo Marks for Your Own Establishment

Now that you've done all this research on your particular type of establishment, you now have the opportunity to design your own! Fun, right? Let's get started...

 

Preliminary Written Design Brief should convey:

How does your new establishment fit in the existing market?

What sets it apart [how is it different?]

Describe your ideal neighborhood & location

Describe the products you'd offer

Describe your ideal customer

Any other information you feel is relevant

 

Preliminary Physical Location Mood Board should convey: 

preliminary color palette

preliminary materials to use

key interior design elements

 

Preliminary Logo Marks Mood Board should convey:

Preliminary color palette

Three possible names for your product line & establishment

Three possible tag lines for your product line & establishment

Nine possible logo mark explorations [three for each possible name/tag line combo]

 

The three elements described above are due on your personal Flickr page in the "225.04 - Branding" set, and to the 225 group flickr pool by 10pm Sunday 4/29. Please also bring print outs of each for a mass in-person crit in class. We'll work on finalizing all of this in class on Monday 4/30 & Wednesday 5/2.

- existing logotypes & supporting elements

- all signage in the physical space

- product packaging

- swag/ branded merchandise

- exterior & interior spaces

Assignment #3: Design a mini product line related to your exhibition

Create  a mini line of goods inspired by the creators you researched previously that could be sold in the venue during the show you've "curated". With this project, I'm again interested in seeing how you research, your creativity, and your design consistency.

 

STEP 1 - due Monday 4/16

Identify what types of products would be appropriate for your artists & the chosen venue. Research several product lines similar to your own. Pay attention to limited color palettes, typography, materials for your own potential line of goods. Document at least 3 different product lines on 3 different moodboards  in a Flickr set called "225.03 - product line"  and post them to the group pool.

 

STEP 2 - work in class on Monday 4/16

1. Initial 20 thumbnail product sketches - also show us colors & materials. groups for classmate feedback and suggestions. Bring your laptop, and any materials you need to work in class.

2. Refined sketches of 5 items due by the end of class.

 

STEP 3 - due Wednesday 4/18

For Wednesday I'd like to see:

The same 5 different but related products for each artist/designer, so that you'll have 3 mini collections and a larger 15 piece collection. Each mini collection should work together color-wise or thematically or whatever other perimeter you think of, while working within the larger collection as well.

...or if it's easier for you to make a physical sample and photograph it you can do that too. 

For Wednesday, I want to see your micro and macro collections represented on Flickr How you present it will depend on your products and venue. Post this in a "225.03 - product line"  Flickr set  on your own page and posted to the group pool. We'll spend time going over each collection in class. Again, I'll be grading you on 85% finish!

 

Assignment #2: Design a Poster/Postcard set for a gallery/art show in PDX

Design an 11x17 museum exhibition poster and a 4.25x6 postcard showcasing the three visual creators you've just studied. All three visual creators should be referenced visually somehow, as the fictional exhibition will showcase the work of all three.

The exhibition should take place in a complementary gallery or museum or boutique or coffee shop here in Portland. This is your opportunity to research various art and design venues in town and choose the most appropriate one for your creators! Once you've narrowed down your venue, visit it and look at their show postcards and posters. You'll find that most venues will have a poster/postcard "formula" for you to follow/emulate.

With this project, I'm interested in seeing how you research, and how you approach your work. This will help me tailor our future projects together!

 

STEP 1 - due Monday 4/9

Research art/design venues in Portland. Visit your 1-3 choice venue[s] and document each with photos and/or sketches. Document your visit, their posters and their postcards in separate moodboards for each venue in a Flickr set called "225.02 - exhibition"  and post them to the group pool.

 

STEP 2 - due Monday 4/9

Visually document your preliminary poster/postcard thumbnail sketches in the Flickr set called "225.02 - exhibition" and post it to the group pool.

Monday in class we'll go over your initial research and thumbnails in small groups for classmate feedback and suggestions. Bring your laptop, and any materials you need to work in class.

 

STEP 3 - due Wednesday 4/11

Final Poster and postcard due in a Flickr set called "225.02_finals" Please also print them out [doesn't have to be fancy paper or anything] so we can crit them together in person. On Wednesday in class we'll go over your final posters and postcards as a class. Don't forget to bring your laptop!

 

Welcome 2012 students & First Assignments!

Let's jump right in with... Project #1: Find and identify your design loves

In-class Assignment #1: Between now and Wednesday, join our Flickr group here: http://www.flickr.com/groups/jill225_sp12/.

In-class/Homework Assignment #2: we need to figure out what makes you work! What graphic designers, artists, product designers, furniture designers, clothing designers or architects do you admire, aspired towards and emulate? For Wednesday, spend some time with the internet, books, and magazines to find a bunch of inspiration.

Ideally, you'll immerse yourself in several different visual creator's work and be looking at a ton of different examples of their work to get an in-depth idea of what they're all about. 

STEP 1

Deconstruct each visual creator's work, and show/tell us what consistencies you see. Point out the repeated colors, forms, materials, subject matter of each piece by creating an 11x17 mood board [illustrator or photoshop file] for each visual creator consisting of:

a. Choose 5 examples of the many you've looked at that you feel best encapsulates each of your 3 different artist/designer/visual creators.  Make sure you attribute the source of each piece. Give a link to the original, if it’s online.

b. a visual color palette of 3 - 5 repeated colors

c. describe visually and with words 3 - 5 repeated forms

d. describe visually and with words 3 - 5 repeated materials used

d. describe visually and with words 3 - 5 repeated themes/subject matter

In your personal Flickr account, create a set called “225.01 - loves.” Within this set, upload  the 3 moodboards listed above. Then, add each of these files to the 225 group pool by 10pm Tuesday night!

 

STEP 2

At the end, tell us about all the specific repetitions and consistencies you see overall in all the work. Create a mood board encompassing all three creators' work consisting of:

a. a visual color palette of 3 - 5  overall repeated colors

b. describe visually and with words 3 - 5 overall repeated forms

c. describe visually and with words 3 - 5  overall repeated materials used

d. describe visually and with words 3 - 5  overall repeated themes/subject matter

Upload this master moodboard within the  “225.01 - loves" set. Then, add this file to the 225 group pool by 10pm Tuesday night!

 

STEP 3

Tell us, with words in your sketchbook or journal, why each of these attributes you’ve identified appeals to you. Get as in-depth as possible! Think of this as therapy. If some of it is too personal to share with the rest of us, that's ok. you won't be expected to share all of it.
