Position Description & Tasks: Existing website requires graphic and functional redesign. Existing content must be merged within the redesign.  The work is extensive and will provide the applicant with an opportunity to expand work experience on a site recognized as a leader in jazz scholarship. On January 26th, 31st and February 2nd Assistant Professor Ian Whitmore will be demonstrating the fundamentals of setting up and creating a custom WordPress web site during his ART440 class from 3:00-6:00pm.

He is inviting any upper division Graphic Design majors who have taken/or are taking ART341 to drop in and follow along, take notes and see the general awesomeness that is WordPress.

Faculty are welcome to attend as well! 

This will be a demonstration only so note taking will be essential. He is going to look into recording the demos to create some tutorial videos later on.

321 students in the night section visited w+k. We met with Brad Trost, art director, Maya Roberts and Alicia Kuna, studio managers. We had a great time —well at least I know I (Lis C.) did! Maya generously presented an amazing tiered promotional campaign for Laika's film Coraline. 

w+k's "challenge: How can we get a broader audience to be excited about a movie that looks like a typical children's film but is much more? How could we use the equities we had to market this film in a way that reflects its unique nature and gets people excited to see it?" Here are some of their answers:

To get an overview of the whole campaign click here. Among the work that was shared with us: mini-documentaries about the making of Coraline, campaign strategy, dunks, wild postings, street art installations, interactive storefronts, movie posters, web sites and 50 hand crafted boxes that were sent  to "influencers" (like notcot.org) to help promote the film. Web Design Trends for 2009: Jumping Point for Discussion

Web Trend Number Four (according to Smashing Magazine): Big Type! 

Smashing Magazine released their list of 2009 web trends a few days ago. This is a good list to look over and also a good list to generate discussion...do you agree with these trends? Do you see these trends being used in sites that you currently look at? Fun exercise: try and find these web elements in the wild. Hint: anything that is a web app is rich with these trends (see twitter, brightkite, crazyegg and vimeo to name a few).

Another place to keep on top of current popular web news is to check delicious popular every few days or so to see what the internet is bookmarking. What are you looking at? What sites excite you in 2009?
